Friends of the Center get a Like Water for Chocolate exclusive look
Have you ever wanted to observe a dress rehearsal of one of the greatest dance companies in the world? To watch some of ballet’s biggest stars as they take notes from their director and finely tune their performance? To see the next big ballet come together before opening night? This is something you can do as a Friend of the Center!
One of the many benefits of being a donor at Segerstrom Center for the Arts is the chance to see the works we present as they come together. Our next opportunity for this is the working rehearsal for the North American premiere of American Ballet Theatre’s Like Water for Chocolate on Tuesday, March 28.

A working rehearsal is one of the last chances that performers have to put the finishing touches on a ballet, and our donors get to be in the room where it happens! Our guests have seen the dancers incorporate notes from their director on the spot. Watching the artistic process of a powerhouse creative team and some of the best ballet dancers in the world is truly an experience unlike any other.
Past working rehearsals have included holiday favorite The Nutcracker, as well as Harlequinade and Of Love and Rage. However, Like Water for Chocolate will be an especially exciting experience as it is the ballet’s North American premiere. For this beautiful production, Tony Award-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon joins forces with composer Joby Talbot and Tony Award-winning costume designer Bob Crowley to bring the famous novel by Laura Esquivel to mouth-watering life.
Through our partnership with American Ballet Theatre, Segerstrom Center has been home to numerous U.S. and world premiere ballets throughout years including ABT’s Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Whipped Cream, Firebird, and Of Love and Rage. This partnership also includes the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School which has provided unrivaled classical ballet training since 2015. In September 2021, Segerstrom Center was designated the official West Coast home of American Ballet Theatre.
