Communication Specialist

Segerstrom Center for the Arts is Orange County’s premier arts organization. The Center has earned praise both as a world-class venue and as one of America’s leading presenters of national and international performing artists and companies. The Communication Specialist is responsible for gaining massive media exposure for the variety of Segerstrom Center for the Arts programming including Broadway, jazz, cabaret, chamber orchestra and ensembles, comedy and speaker series, and institutional programs. These institutional events include family-friendly programming and performances, outdoor movie screenings, concerts, dance classes, and diverse community and engagement festivals. By crafting attention-grabbing stories and creating a multi-channel PR plan on channels such as print, digital, radio, podcasts, social, online and TV, this role will be instrumental in developing and executing Public Relations (PR) plans using traditional and nontraditional communication strategies. This role is full-time non-exempt and will supervise the Public Relations Assistant.


  • Work in partnership with and under the direction of the Senior Director of Communications to develop and execute PR plans and media campaigns.
  • Build, maintain and cultivate successful relationships with executives, talent, influencers, and key media members, locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • Develop new media relationships on an ongoing basis.
  • Conduct research to support PR planning and develop PR editorial opportunities to increase awareness.
  • Field inquiries when reporters call for information.
  • Draft pitches, pitch letters, press releases, and other deliverables, as required for performances/programing.
  • Support outside agency partners with routing accurate show information to include performance/artists bios, pictures, and relevant information for crafting press releases and pitching.
  • Develop press kit materials for media partners including press releases, images, pitch letters, feature articles, a listing of events, and other PR and marketing collateral.
  • Create and oversee media events from start to finish, including drafting and executing thoughtful run of press nights/days and managing the event on-site.
  • Oversee, draft speaking points, and escort talent in various capacities at press days and junkets, premieres, red carpets, Q&As, and interviews.
  • Track, evaluate, identify key insights, and share results of PR efforts with the department Vice President.
  • Craft social media influencer campaigns while working closely with the social media marketing coordinator to drive awareness and exposure of performances through social media channels that include but are not limited to Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok, etc.
  • Develop and manage media lists on Cision, Google Sheets, editorial calendars, and more.
  • Create and maintain attendance lists, send out press invitations and follow up to ensure participation. Ensure post-event follow-up occurs with press and influencer attendees.
  • Coordinate the creation of press invitations with graphic designers.
  • Develop impactful photoshoots including hiring photographers, negotiating costs, directing all logistics/timelines, securing space, overseeing execution, and photo approvals.
  • Maintain, grow, and build a photographer list accessible for targeted performance or institutional marketing events. It also includes booking photographers for designated events. 
  • Monitor and provide performance show event listing updates to media partners.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of related professional experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in building relationships and interacting with the media.
  • Team player; action-oriented, diligent, and energetic.
  • Creative thinker who loves producing innovative ideas or improving upon the tried-and-true.
  • Ability to work under pressure and produce results within an ever-changing environment.
  • Proactive and organized; must have a solid ability to multitask and take ownership of projects and relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in interacting with a variety of stakeholders, required.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Adaptable; Excels in a fast-paced working environment and welcomes challenges.
  • Ability to pitch and write press releases across different genres of entertainment that represent the Center, required.
  • Experience using Cision and Google Drive programs is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and photo and video editing is a plus.
  • A passion for the performing arts is beneficial.


  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, and handwrite.
  • Routine walking/standing.
  • Occasionally lift/carry objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

Hourly range: 
$28.85 - $32.69 per hour
