In Spring, Our Thoughts Turn to ...
The Concert Series
The Concert Series continues this spring with two special performances. Both concerts will be in Samueli Theater. "The 350-seat Samueli is a chamber-music dream machine," says the Los Angeles Times. "Its acoustic is so lively that a listener almost feels onstage with the performance." It makes for a memorable musical evening for artists and audience.
Wu Han, Philip Setzer and David Finckel: The Schubert Trios
March 27
What is so special about Schubert's Piano Trios? Fellow composer Robert Schumann said that after listening to them "the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again." This exquisite piece of music is a masterpiece that has a luminous effect on audiences, and when played by three of the best musicians performing today, they are nothing short of miraculous. Schubert was attuned to creating a musical world that demonstrates his ability to balance the Classicism and Romantic influences current in his day into something that resonates still. Pianist Wu Han, violinist Philip Setzer and cellist David Finckel pay tribute to the genius of Schubert as they take the audience on this unforgettable musical journey.

Calder String Quartet with Gloria Cheng
April 29
The Calder String Quartet returns with a program that stretches across the 20th century: Stravinsky, Janácek and Thomas Adés' Piano Quintet, composed in 2000. For the latter piece, the Calder will be joined by Grammy-winning pianist Gloria Cheng, who is widely recognized as a colorful and communicative interpreter of contemporary music.
The Calder Quartet continues to expand the boundaries of chamber music by performing both traditional quartet repertoire as well as partnering with innovative modern composers and performing works by emerging young musicians. The four local young men—the group formed at University of Southern California—have wowed the critics, including the Los Angeles Times' Mark Swed, who says, "The Calder Quartet—suave in appearance and elegantly unified in its playing—is the model of the sleek young string quartet. They have a reverence for the formal Classical style and for formal Modernism as well." This will serve them well for this riveting program.
