L'Orfeo

Written in 1607, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo has the distinction of being the earliest surviving opera still regularly performed. Based on the Greek legend of Orpheus, L’Orfeo tells the story of Orpheus’ descent to the underworld and his unsuccessful attempt to bring his bride Eurydice back to the life.
