Segerstrom Center celebrated the opening of 'Million Dollar Quartet' on Tuesday, April 24 with a special President’s Dinner for sponsors of the MDQ engagement and Center donors plus a dance-crazy cast party. The Tony® Award-winning musical is set on December 4, 1956, when an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together. Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll” who was responsible for launching the careers of each icon, brought the four legendary musicians together at the Sun Records storefront studio in Memphis for the first and only time. The resulting evening became known as one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll jam sessions in history.
And Founders Hall was set in ‘50s retro. It was shakin’ and rockin’ and rollin’ with the tunes of Cash, Lewis, Perkins and Presley and decked with vintage vinyl disks and video clips of the music legends themselves projected on the walls. After the show, everyone-plus returned to greet the cast and company with a rousing ovation.
On hand were special underwriters Deborah and Larry Bridges, Marta and Raj Bhathal, Center Chairman Larry Higby and Dee Higby and Bette and Wylie Aitken. VIPs from Wells Fargo, a major supporter of the Center’s 2011-2012 Broadway Series, were also on hand. Others on the scene were Floyd Mutrux, who co-wrote the MDQ book, and his wife Birgitte, Dorothea Cist, JoAnn and Tony Fanticola – who could have been contestants on Dancing with the Stars – Ellie and Mike Gordon, Melissa and Bill Meehan and Sue and Ralph Stern.
